With the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, GM chooses evolution over revolution

There's no vehicle more important to General Motors than the Chevrolet Silverado. Full-size pickups account for a fifth of GM's U.S. sales and an even larger share of its profits, and Silverado customers rank among the most loyal of any vehicle GM builds. Today, Chevrolet and GMC revealed the all-new 2014 editions of the Silverado and GMC Sierra — offering much-needed updates everywhere, but far from dramatic change overall.
While every piece of the Silverado is new, GM kept to a more conservative approach than Ford has with its F-Series or Chrysler took with the Ram division. There's no twin-turbo downsized engines or 8-speed transmissions, and GM didn't reveal exact power or fuel economy figures, which will be finalized just before the trucks go on sale in the middle of next year. Given the leaps made by Ford and Ram, the Silverado will face competition tougher than at any point in GM's 111-year history of truck building.
Instead, GM is counting on loyal buyers to embrace a slew of updates to the trucks they already know. The engine lineup remains the same -- a 4.3-liter V-6, and V-8s of 5.3 liters and 6.2 liters -- tied to a new six-speed automatic transmission. Engineers gave the motors a thorough reworking, adding bits of fuel saving technology like direct injection and cylinder shutoff at highway speeds, and claim sizable improvements in power, torque and fuel efficiency — but without exact specs it's unknown how far those changes go toward closing the fuel economy gap with Ford and Chrysler. The frame grows tougher, and the suspension also gets reworked, but keeps its basic setup of coil springs and struts in front with leaf springs in the rear.
The most noticeable changes come on the inside, where Chevy and GMC have brought the truck's interiors into the 21st century. There's a new, more handsome dash than the previous generation, along with the now-requisite touch screen info-entertainment center with controls that can be operated with work gloves on. While the majority of pickups see duty as pure work vehicles, there's a growing market for luxury editions of half-ton pickups like the Ram Laramie Longhorn and Ford King Ranch whose sticker prices can break $50,000, and the Silverado's entry, known as the High Country, will offer a leather-wrapped cocoon.
With three factories to retool, GM won't begin selling the new Sierra and Silverado until mid-2013, giving GM several months of running room until Ford and Chrysler launch their updated models. No models GM has launched since emerging from bankruptcy in 2009 will determine more about its future than these pickups. They better be ready to carry the load.

GM CEO to Auction 1958 Corvette for Charity

Chevy_delillo_11_26
Selling unique versions of the Chevy Corvette to raise money for charity is nothing new for General Motors—and coincidentally, neither is the Corvette that GM will offer at the upcoming 2013 Barrett-Jackson auction in Scottsdale, Ariz. In fact, that car, which will be auctioned to support Habitat for Humanity, is some 45 years old. But don’t worry, its current owner—GM president and CEO Dan Akerson—has kept the vehicle in showroom condition.
“The 1958 Corvette is pure American ingenuity and creativity and the free spirit that Chevrolet represents to me.  I love the car—but I think it’s probably better purposed somewhere else,” Akerson said. “The need for Habitat for Humanity is so great that I thought, ‘Wow, maybe I could really make a difference in a whole different way.’”
Of course, Akerson’s commitment to the Detroit chapter of Habitat for Humanity isn’t a sudden thing either. Before offering up his own personal 1958 Corvette to support the organization, he also made a personal donation of $1 million to launch a three-year Habitat program to serve families in Detroit’s Morningside Commons neighborhood. Proceeds from the Corvette auction will go to the Detroit-area project as well, and there should be plenty.
After all, just 510 Corvettes from 1958 were made wearing the same Regal Turquoise finish found on Akerson’s Corvette, so it’s considered a rarity among rarities.
“The fact that Dan is giving up a car that I know must mean an awful lot to him is very humbling,” said Vincent Tilford, executive director of Habitat for Humanity Detroit. “For whoever buys this classic car, not only are they going to give it a new home, but they’re also going to give new, better and healthier homes to families in this neighborhood—and actually help rebuild an entire community.”

Seven Services Your Car Needs Before Winter Sets In

Snow and winter. You probably won’t see one without the other (well, maybe last year, but I doubt we will be fortunate enough to have another warm winter…). Even famously sunny Florida gets its share of snow – 14 snow “events” in the state since 2000, after only 23 snow “events” during the entire 20th century!
People across the country will be pulling out the sweaters, firing up the boilers and turning up the thermostat in preparation for the coming cold weather, but its also a good time to think about your car. After all, just because it’s cold outside, with a few flurries in the air, doesn't mean you’ll stop driving altogether.
With that in mind, we give you seven services you should have done on your car before winter sets in for good. (Lucky for you, most of these services are often performed at little or no cost as part of an oil change and inspection at our Hare Chevrolet Service Department!)
  1.  Freshen the Oil – Motor oil has two tough jobs: It has to beat the heat during the summer while it protects your engine, and it has to flow quickly during winter’s cold temperatures to lubricate your car’s engine when it first cranks up.
  2. Check the Cool – Ever filled a glass bottle full of water, screwed the top on tight, and then put it in the freezer to see what would happen? It’s not good, don’t try it. (But if you must know, it explodes!) Imagine what can happen inside your engine and radiator if the water/antifreeze mixture isn't strong enough to prevent it from freezing in cold weather. Before the mercury dips, have your antifreeze strength tested, and consider replacing the old antifreeze if it may be too weak to handle the winter.
  3. Top the Wash – Like antifreeze, your windshield washer fluid is a special blend of alcohol and water that resists freezing Make sure to have your fluid topped off before welcoming wet wintry weather to your neck of the woods, because the last thing you want to find when trying to wash your windshield on a cold morning is frozen washer fluid.
  4. Switch the Blades – Your windshield wipers took a beating during the looooong, hot summer and the summer wears down the rubber. That means your wipers may not work as well in the winter as you would like, an important safety consideration since most areas of the country receive at least some wintry precipitation. Consider having your wiper blades replaced now (which Hare Chevrolet’s Parts Department can help you with!) so they keep your vision unimpaired when that first snowstorm hits.
  5. Crank the Juice – Mechanics often say batteries die in summer and are buried in winter. That means excess summer heat begins to degrade a battery’s ability to generate enough electricity to get your car started, and when the cold weather of winter makes cranking even harder, the battery simply isn’t up to the task. Fortunately, today’s high-tech battery testers can quickly and easily tell what shape your car’s battery is in, allowed you to head off possible cranking difficulties before you find yourself stranded in the cold.
  6. Flush It – Did you know it actually absorbs moisture from the atmosphere in normal conditions? When the temperature drops and seals get brittle, even more water can diffuse its way into the brake fluid. Eventually the brake fluid can become so contaminated, the brake pedal may feel mushy and unresponsive. To make sure this doesn’t happen to you have your brake fluid tested, and the system flushed if necessary. It’s also a good time for a technician to examine your car’s brake pads, rotors and other brake components to confirm they are in good condition. After all, you want reliable stopping power when it’s slippery outside.
  7. Tread Carefully – The only thing keeping your car on the road is four tiny patches of rubber, each about the size of your hand. If your tires are worn, the channels that move water away from those contact patches may not be big enough to function like they’re supposed to, leaving you with less traction. Not a good thing. So give your tires the once-over to make sure the tread has adequate life left.

2013 Chevrolet Spark Test Drive

Chevy’s sprightly minicar, the Spark, is a big seller around the globe, but it wasn't developed with North America in mind. The "old" GM might have shipped the Korean-made tyke over to our shores and hoped for the best. Thankfully for us, the GM of today unleashed a squadron of homeland Detroit engineers onto the Spark to modify and improve the little machine for the U.S.
Under that short hood is an 84-hp, 1.25-liter four-cylinder. That’s .5-liter more than Sparks have in other markets. "The real goal there was to get a flatter, more usable torque curve out of the engine," ride and handling engineer Nathan Sumner says. The team at GM also retuned the intake manifold and the whole exhaust system to give our Spark a sportier sound and optimized the gear ratios in both the five-speed manual and the four-speed automatic with unique gearing for the U.S. market.
The original Spark was a soft rider and not what you’d describe as a fun machine when the road twists. To impart a livelier feel, Sumner’s colleagues lowered the car by 10 mm and retuned the suspension bushings and shocks. Anyone who’s spent time in a Smart ForTwo knows how unsettled that car feels at highway speeds. Sumner didn't want that to be the Spark’s Achilles’ heel, so he minimized the nervousness on the highway by first adding 15-inch wheels and improved tires, then fine-tuning the suspension. "Just a small tweak will make all the difference in the world," Sumner says. "I made one little change to the rear damper tuning, and it just calmed the whole car down. It’s really kind of a black art sometimes, finding just the right balance."
The American Spark also comes with an electronic power-steering system. It provides variable assist based on speed, so the driver can dial in a lighter feel around town and more heft through the wheel as the Spark piles on speed. "When you increase the effort at highways speeds, it makes the car much more stable and less twitchy," Sumner says.
GM says it improved the door seals, baffles, carpeting, engine acoustics, and wipers to make the Spark a quieter place to spend time. And the U.S. team enhanced the bodywork for aero. Lowering the Spark and making tweaks such as changing the mirrors gained a little by way of mileage. Sparks equipped with a manual transmission return 34 mpg combined—not exactly hybrid-level fuel sipping but not too shabby.
On the inside, the Spark has 10 airbags as well as a rollover sensing system. A gauge pod reminiscent of the Sonic, the Spark’s bigger brother, sits up front with a large LCD screen in the dash for infotainment. The rear seat on global Sparks seats three people. But that middle seat was deemed too narrow for American posteriors, so a handy console resides in its place, making the car a four-seater. There’s 11.4 cubic feet behind that rear seat and a solid 31.2 cubic feet with the rear seat folded.
Bottom Line: The Spark is clearly the most practical minicar in the segment. It conveys a sense of lighthearted fun as you slice though city traffic. Compared with Chevy’s larger Sonic, the Spark is clearly a level down in terms of ride, handling, isolation, and power. But for less than $13,000, the Spark is a solid deal.

Small-Block V-8 is the Heart of Chevrolet Corvette

Engine

For 58 of its 60 years, the Chevrolet Corvette has been powered by the legendary Chevrolet V-8 engine. Technological advancements have increased output threefold – from 195 hp in 1955 to 638 hp today – as well as reliability, refinement and efficiency.
However, the fundamental architecture of the Chevrolet “Small Block” remains the same today as it was in 1955: a 90-degree V-8, with overhead valves actuated by pushrods, and a 4.4-inch on-center bore spacing.
“The brilliance of the Chevrolet V-8 is its elegant, efficient design,” said Jordan Lee, global chief engineer for Small Block Engines. “The Chevy V-8 has fewer reciprocating parts, and is very efficient and has one of the best power-to-weight ratios of any engine family in the industry. The design is incredibly compact, enabling the Corvette’s signature sleek profile and low hood line.”
Despite a sporty appearance, the early Corvettes’ performance didn’t match their good looks. The car launched in 1953 with the “Blue Flame” inline six-cylinder engine and a two-speed automatic transmission – not exactly the stuff on which to build a sports car legend. That changed in 1955, when the new small-block V-8 engine became available and was ordered by 99 percent of Corvette buyers.
Not only did the new and significantly more powerful engine breathe new life into the Corvette’s driving experience, it could be linked to a three-speed manual transmission that gave the driver an even greater connection to the car. The result made the Corvette a proper sports car, and enthusiasts responded. Sales nearly doubled from 1954 and by the end of the decade, they nearly tripled.
Immediately after the V-8 was introduced, the small-block began a steady march upward in displacement, power and technological advancement.
The Corvette’s first 4.3L (265 cu. in.) small-block engine in 1955 produced up to 195 hp with an optional four-barrel carburetor. Today, the LS9 6.2L (376 cu. in.) supercharged small-block in the Corvette ZR1 is rated at 638 hp (476 kW), delivering about 230 percent more power than the original small-block engine from only 42 percent greater displacement.
Today’s small-block is also remarkably fuel efficient. For example, the 430-horsepower (476 kW) LS3 version of the Gen-IV small-block helps the 2013 Corvette accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about four seconds, run the quarter-mile in just more than 12 seconds and achieve a top speed of 190 mph – all while achieving EPA-estimated highway fuel economy of 26 mpg.
That fuel economy compares favorably to vehicles more commonly associated with daycare drop-off vehicles than road-course lap times. Indeed, the Corvette’s highway fuel economy is better than the 2013 Hyundai Equus (23 mpg), Volvo XC90 AWD (23 mpg) or Subaru Legacy with the 3.6L flat-6 (25 mpg) – and it matches the Toyota Venza (26 mpg). It also matches or beats other sports cars with smaller engines, including the Nissan 370Z (26 mpg/3.7L V-6), Porsche 911 Turbo (24 mpg/3.8L flat-6) and BMW Z4 (26 mpg/3.0L straight-6).

The first pre-production 2014 Impala rolled off the assembly line yesterday.

Picture
Who’s going to be the first in line to get Chevy’s flagship sedan? Impala has always been a flagship for Chevrolet. But a leader should never rest on the laurels of its past — especially when it wears the Chevy bowtie. So, when it came time to reinvent one of the brand’s most iconic nameplates, Chevy designers and engineers reached far into the future and shaped it in the present. The end result is a stunning new interpretation of the Impala that’s only recognizable by its signature badge.

Sculptural, athletic, head-turning design
Form and function thoughtfully converge in the 2014 Impala design. The exterior is characterized by smooth, flowing contours that are as visually stunning as they are aerodynamic. Poised on standard 20-inch wheels, the stance of the 2014 Impala is both aggressive and confident — a reflection of the power, efficiency and comfort drivers will enjoy when they take the wheel.

Upscale, refined, spacious interior
When you first step into the 2014 Impala, you immediately notice how roomy and quiet it is. Yet, at the same time, you also feel uniquely connected to the environment. That’s because the design of the interior is deliberately driver-centric. The instrument panel flows around the cockpit. The controls are ergonomically placed. Rich chrome and wood accents, sumptuous available leather-appointed seating and unique available ambient lighting elevate the luxurious feel. Overall, it’s the type of experience that makes driving truly rewarding.

Dynamic, spirited, efficient performance
No one wants to sacrifice power for fuel efficiency. That’s why the 2014 Impala offers three engine choices to suit your needs: the available 303-horsepower 3.6L V6 engine that goes from 0 to 60 in 6.8 seconds and offers 28 MPG† on the highway, the standard 2.5L 4-cylinder engine that delivers 31 MPG† on the highway and 195 horsepower, and the 2.4L 4-cylinder engine with E-assist that delivers and estimated 35 MPG† on the highway and 182 horsepower. Either way, enhanced driving dynamics and premium rack-mounted electric power steering make for a nimble, responsive ride.

Advanced, intuitive infotainment technology
The 2014 Impala is equipped with the newest Chevrolet MyLink™† in-car infotainment system, which seamlessly integrates Bluetooth®† wireless for select phones, advanced touch-screen technology and natural voice recognition. It allows drivers to make calls, stream music from online services like Pandora,®† operate USB†-connected devices —and so much more — with ease. They can even customize the high-resolution 8-inch color touch-screen for quicker access to the features they use most. It’s advanced technology that makes connectivity a whole lot simpler.

Smart, proactive safety features
Impala also gets numerous safety enhancements for 2014. Its structure incorporates more high-strength steel than before along with 10 standard air bags† to help mitigate the impact of a collision. Advanced safety technologies are also available, including Lane Departure Warning, Forward Collision Alert and Full-Speed Range Adaptive Cruise Control with Collision Mitigation Braking,† Rear Park Assist with Rearview Camera and Side Blind Zone Alert with Cross-Traffic Radar Alert. These available features proactively help protect against the unexpected.

Coming in early Spring 2013
The arrival of the 2014 Impala is a milestone for Chevrolet, as it demonstrates how the brand’s longstanding commitment to excellence is advanced by uncompromising vision and continuous innovation.

“The momentum at Chevrolet continues to build with the debut of the 10th generation of the Impala, one of the brand's most enduring and cherished nameplates,” says Chris Perry, vice president of Global Chevrolet Marketing. “The new Impala further strengthens Chevrolet’s passenger car lineup by giving consumers a full-size sedan that balances the desire for distinction with engaging driving dynamics.”

Let's Hope This is What the 2014 Corvette Looks Like

There have been some exciting versions of the current C6 Corvette, including the Z06, ZR1, and for us regular workin’ Joes, the Grand Sport. But anticipation for the next-generation C7 Corvette has been running high, as evidenced by the off-the-charts pageviews we got from some spy shots of a mule testing a few months ago. Well, Trinity Animation, a graphical animation firm based in Lee’s Summit, Missouri, did one better by combining all the publicly-available knowledge, photos and renderings of the upcoming C7 and synthesizing all the information into a two and a half minute video giving us an idea of what it might look like in the flesh.

Among some of the noteworthy details show in the video are rectangular taillights similar to those on the Camaro, center-mounted quad tailpipe tips, LED accent lighting in the headlamps, and aggressive front fender vents. Another cool feature, if it makes it to production, are the LED lights on the outer rear edge of the rear wheel wells. Also, rather than the domed glass hatch on the current C6 Corvette, this rendering of the C7 shows side rear-quarter windows, and a flat glass rear hatch.

How close will Trinity’s animation be to the real deal? We’ll have to wait a few more months until the production C7 Corvette is unveiled. Possibly as early as the 2013 Detroit Auto Show in January.

Chevrolet Wins Three J.D. Power APEAL Study SM Segments

For Immediate Release: Wednesday, July 25, 2012

Chevrolet Wins Three J.D. Power APEAL StudySM Segments
More than any other brand

DETROIT – Chevrolet has more segment award recipients in the 2012 J.D. Power and Associates Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout (APEAL) Study SM than any other brand, with Chevrolet Volt, Sonic and Avalanche customers praising their purchases after three months of ownership.

The Volt electric car with extended range, the Sonic subcompact, as well as the Avalanche were each named segment award recipients.

“This stamp of approval from our owners is the best kind of recognition we could hope for and drives us to ensure all of the vehicles in the Chevrolet lineup meet the highest expectations,” said Chris Perry, Chevrolet vice president of global marketing.

The Volt ranked highest in its segment for the second year in a row with high marks for fuel economy and range as well as in engine/transmission performance. The Sonic, the only subcompact built in the United States and one of the brand’s newest products, got high marks for exterior styling, storage and space, and seats. And the Avalanche’s unique ability to convert from SUV to pickup truck has attracted a loyal customer group.

The APEAL study is based on responses from more than 74,000 purchasers and lessees of new 2012 model year vehicles surveyed at 90 days of ownership. The study examines how gratifying a new vehicle is to own and drive based on more than 80 vehicle attributes.

Chevrolet’s commitment to quality and the steady introduction of new, fuel-efficient products with the technology and features that more customers want helped the brand achieve all-time record global sales in the second quarter of 1.3 million vehicles.  Chevrolet is in the midst of launching the all-new Spark mini-car and Malibu mid-size sedan and will launch an all-new Impala early next year.

Founded in 1911 in Detroit, Chevrolet is now one of the world's largest car brands, doing business in more than 140 countries and selling more than 4 million cars and trucks a year. Chevrolet provides customers with fuel-efficient vehicles that feature spirited performance, expressive design and high quality. ‘Diamond Rings’ Shine on Chevrolet Sonic, Cruze

Extra-hard, low-friction carbon coating prolongs life of piston rings, aids fuel efficiency

The diamond-hard technology that enables razor blades to shave closer and last longer also allows the piston rings of the Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine, available on the 2012 Chevrolet Sonic and Cruze, to operate with less friction for better fuel efficiency and durability.

This use of diamond-like carbon coating, or DLC, on a General Motors powertrain component marks a first for Chevrolet. Although the advanced synthetic surface treatment is relatively new to automobiles, it can be found on a variety of high-end products, such as computer hard drives, orthopedic implants and semi-conductors. GM also is testing its use on machining tools.

In general, piston rings seal an engine’s combustion chamber, support heat transfer from the pistons to the cylinder wall and regulate engine oil consumption. In the Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine, the slick, synthetically hardened steel rings do these things with minimal wear and tear.

“Thanks to diamond-like carbon coating, we can use lower tension on the Ecotec’s piston rings to reduce friction, which improves fuel economy,” said Rich Ricchi, GM Powertrain technical specialist. “DLC also reduces oil consumption in high-mileage driving, due to the favorable wear properties associated with the DLC coating.”

With the Ecotec 1.4L turbo engine and six-speed transmission, Sonic delivers an EPA-estimated 29 mpg in city driving and 40 mpg on the highway. When similarly equipped, Cruze delivers up to 26 mpg in the city and 38 mpg on the highway.

Depending on its intended use, diamond-like carbon coating can be chemically engineered to resist wear, control friction or avoid adhesion. In industrial applications, such as those being tested at a GM powertrain facility, a specially formulated DLC coating on metal hole-drilling tools helps avoid aluminum adhesion that can “gum up” machinery and cause production delays.

Having “cracked the code” of diamond-like carbon coating chemistry on Ecotec’s piston rings, GM is looking to use DLC on other powertrain components, such as rocker arms, as early as 2014.

“Through years of lab research, we’ve acquired an understanding of how to work with DLC at the atomic level,” said Michael Lukitsch, GM senior researcher. “It holds great promise for future applications, both in advanced manufacturing processes and improved production parts that save our customers money.”

2013 Chevrolet Spark Drops CD Player, Signals End of Era

The 2013 Chevrolet Spark is the first postmodern Chevy without a factory-installed CD player.

The move signals Chevrolet's desire to attract a younger buyer such as those Generation Y consumers who grew up using the Internet.

The Spark's 1LT and 2LT versions sport the MyLink infotainment system, which has a 7-inch color touchscreen, which allows the driver to use the apps and music on a mobile device.

Just the Facts:
  • The 2013 Chevrolet Spark is the first postmodern Chevy without a factory-installed CD player.
  • The move signals Chevrolet's desire to attract a younger buyer such as those Generation Y consumers who grew up using the Internet.

DETROIT — What isn't included in the dashboard of the 2013 Chevrolet Spark is as interesting as what is.
The Spark mini car is the first postmodern Chevy without a factory-installed CD player, ending a 20-year tradition since the automaker widely introduced the music players in its vehicles in the 1990s.
The move signals Chevrolet's desire to attract a younger buyer, the "digital natives" — those Generation Y consumers who grew up using the Internet and have no experience using a record player or cassette tapes.
"It isn't so much about eliminating the CD player as it is offering to consumers the type of connectivity and technology they are interested in," said Chevrolet spokeswoman Afaf Farah, in a telephone interview with Inside Line.
"Millennials are attached to their mobile devices and they do everything on them, so this was a way to offer the connectivity in their vehicles they are looking for because they will be able to use their apps and the music they've stored," she added.
Rather than include both, Chevy omitted the CD player to contain costs, even on the basic LS Model, with a starting price of $12,995, Farah said.
The Spark's 1LT and 2LT versions sport the MyLink infotainment system, with its 7-inch color touchscreen, a three-month trial of SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Bluetooth streaming audio for music and select phones, and the ability to play music through Pandora Internet music service.
The 2013 Chevrolet Spark hatchback is expected at dealerships in August.
Inside Line says: It was only a matter of time before that big CD slot gave way to the smaller, less intrusive USB port. Expect to see more of this in the next few years as the CD player goes the way of the cassette deck.

GM Recalls Chevrolet Cruzes for Safety Modifications

DETROIT - General Motors will recall 413,418 Chevrolet Cruzes in the United States for the 2011 and 2012 model years to modify the engine shield under the vehicle. This change will help prevent any liquids from being trapped in the engine compartment, where a fire could start and spread.
In a separate safety recall, GM will inspect certain cars included in the first recall to assure all welds in the rear compartment were properly applied. Omitted or partially completed welds in up to 249 cars may affect the fuel tank strap secondary brackets attachment to the floor structure and a sub assembly to the rear floor pan.

There are no known crashes, injuries or fatalities related to either recall. Only Cruzes built in Lordstown, Ohio, and sold in the United States and Canada and several hundred exported to Israel are affected.

"The most important thing for our customers to know is that we are proactively working to assure the Cruze is the safe and durable car they purchased," said GM vice president of Global Quality Alicia Boler-Davis. "We are sorry for any inconvenience caused by these actions."

All Cruzes with manual and automatic transmissions built in the United States from September 2010 through May 2012 are included in the engine shield modification.

Improper engine oil change procedures on these vehicles can result in the spilling or dripping of oil. If oil contacts hot engine or exhaust system surfaces, and the engine shield, the shield may ignite and burn, resulting in a possible engine compartment fire.

In Cruzes with manual transmissions, continuing to drive with a completely worn clutch may cause hydraulic fluid to be expelled from the clutch housing vent hole. Under certain circumstances, the fluid could be burning as it exits the vent hole. If it contacts the engine shield, the shield may ignite and a fire may spread to the engine compartment.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration opened a preliminary investigation in April of this year as a result of two engine compartment fires in 2011 model year Cruzes and later added the 2012 model year.

Modifying the engine shield will take about 30 minutes in a Chevrolet dealership service department and will be conducted free of charge. No parts are involved and customers are encouraged to make an appointment with their dealer at their earliest convenience. Owner letters will mailed be beginning July 11. Inspection for the possible missing welds takes only a few minutes. In confirmed cases, the repair would take about three hours.

FINAL Q&A for 2011-2012 Chevrolet Cruze Underhood Fires and Potential Missing Rear Compartment Welds Safety Recalls.

Q&A

Q1. What is the proposed fix for the underhood fires?
A1. The engine shield, also known as the belly pan, can "catch" oil or other hot fluids that might drip from the engine. This occurs most often if an oil change is done improperly or improper parts are used. If these fluids make contact with hot engine parts, such as a manifold or catalytic converter, and then contact the engine shield, a fire could start and spread. Modifying the shield will help prevent any liquids from being trapped in the engine compartment. In Cruzes with manual transmissions, continued driving with a worn clutch may cause extremely hot or burning hydraulic fluid to leak from the manual transmission vent.  Modifying the shield should also help prevent the hydraulic fluid from becoming trapped in the engine compartment, where a fire could start and spread.

Q2. How many fires have occurred?
A2. GM engineers are aware of about 30 fires ? most traced to improper oil change procedures and parts.

Q3. What about the missing welds? How did this happen?
A3. A welding process error in one body shop station created a condition in which up to 249 cars may be missing some welds in the rear of the vehicle.

Q4. So what will you do to cars found missing welds?
A4. The first step is to inspect.  Corrections will be made with mechanical fasteners (bolts and rivets) if necessary.

Q5. What if a customer with a car missing welds doesn't want it anymore? Will GM repurchase the car?
A5.  We are always happy to work with customers.  We believe the repair more than adequately addresses the missing welds issue.

Q6. So are these Cruzes safe to drive?
A6. The Cruze meets or exceeds all federal safety standards. We ask owners to be sure that oil changes on the Cruze properly follow the procedure outlined in the GM Service Information (SI) system. We are communicating with dealers, aftermarket oil change shops and certain suppliers to urge careful following of oil change procedures.

Q7. How many cars are involved in the two recalls?
A7. The total population of Cruzes built in Lordstown, Ohio, from September 2010 through May 2012 is 475,179 vehicles. These cars were sold in the United States and Canada. There are up to 249 cars that may have missing or partially missing welds out of a population of 61,426.

Q8. Were any of these recalled cars exported?
A8. There were 701 cars were exported to Israel.

Q9. Are Cruzes in other markets involved in the underhood fire investigation?
A9. This action only pertains to U.S.-built Cruzes. The involved engine shield and engine combination is only used in U.S.-produced Cruze models. About 10,000 Cruzes with similar design were built by Holden in Australia, but there have been no reported fires there. Other Cruze markets have a different design and there are no reports of underhood fires in other markets for this condition.

Q10. How long will it take to modify the engine shield and inspect for missing welds and repair if necessary?
A10. About 30 minutes to modify the engine shield. However, wait times may be longer depending on the dealership scheduling. For most cars in the weld inspection, the time would be only a few minutes. For the up to 249 vehicles being sought, a repair would take about three hours.

Q11. Will dealers provide loaner cars for customer inconvenience?
A11. There are no specific plans for loaners but we'll try to minimize inconvenience to customers.

Q12. GM has talked about the engine shield helps aerodynamics and improves fuel economy. How does the engine shield modification affect Cruze fuel economy?
A12. There is no impact on current EPA fuel economy estimates. For 2013, additional air pressure to the tires will offset any aerodynamic/fuel economy changes.

Q13. Does this action close the NHTSA investigation on the underhood fires in Cruze?
A13. We have not had any discussion with the NHTSA about its plans for the investigation. You will need to ask NHTSA what their intent in this case.
